How To Change Oil Omc 5.0 Cobra

Hi everyone,

After reading so many posts from Iboats regarding how to change the gear oil/fluid in a Cobra OMC outdrive, I decided to get to work and do it in my new (to me) gunkhole. My boat is an 89 Bayliner 1950 Chevy engine.

Let me throw a disclaimer that I am not a certified marine mechanic and that I am non responsible for whatever impairment that may occur to you, your boat and anyone else. This write up is for informational purposes only. Now, disclaimer aside get to work.

~You volition demand two quarts of gear oil suitable for your gunkhole.
~A manual pump Attwood Gear Lube Pump: Automotive : Walmart.com .There are many out there just this one has a screw on attachment that fabricated the fluid transfer a cakewalk with minimum spill. This one also screws on peak of a quart of oil.
~Nylon washers for the three screws that you will be removing
~Oil catch pan
~your tools

Commencement, you lot have become your personal protection equipment, and asphyxiate the wheels of your boat. So, make sure that it is safe to lower your outdrive. Lower information technology and brand sure that yous can loose the Elevation Center screw in the top of your outdrive. In this picture, you can see that at that place is another (top left) bolt loose but that is another story). If you are able to loosen it, go out information technology loose to permit fluid to bleed.

At present, continue to to loose and remove the oil screw plug on the starboard side of your outdrive.

After information technology drained, supersede the nylon washer with a new one and screw it on tight...sorry, I practise non take the torque numbers.

You are done with the start stage. At present, locate the MIDDLE screw and that is where OMC Cobras have to exist filled in. Not from the bottom screw.

Now, screw the gear pump to the quart of oil/fluid and pump slowly just steady. you lot will come across that minimum air bubbling go in. Don't worry as long as you can fit the 2 quarts at the end and you check that the oil level is at an acceptable level.

After you have pumped in the ii quarts (or most of them). You must tight the meridian spiral BEFORE you disconnect the pump from the outdrive to minimize the oil spill. Trust me, the air lock created by the pinnacle screw minimizes the spillage. And so you can disconnect the pump from the middle spiral.

Last part, go back to the peak screw and check the oil level. Nigh likely it needs more, then clasp the left over from the two quarts and pour it in through that opening.

Recheck that all the screws that you loose and remove are tight, let the air bubbles work their manner upward the summit overnight and check the oil level ane more than fourth dimension before you outset the engine.

Discard the used oil appropriately, clean upwards all the mess with an environmental heed, and you lot are done.

Happy boating,

That's it...
